A strong storm system ahead of a Pacific cold front will bring critical fire conditions and strong winds to the San Antonio area and Hill Country on Thursday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a low chance of storms late Wednesday into early Thursday morning and an isolated storm or two could produce large hail overnight. However, the larger threat will come Thursday afternoon.

The highest-risk areas will be along the northern Interstate 35 corridor and Coastal Plains, NWS said. Bexar County and much of the Hill Country are at marginal risk, meaning isolated severe storms are possible. Some of those storms could be capable of damaging winds and severe hail. A localized tornado threat could also develop.

Damaging, straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes are the main threats, the government forecaster said. Wind gusts could hit 50 mph.
Meanwhile, a fire weather watch remains in effect through Friday for Bexar County and most of South Central Texas.

The primary window for strong storms in Hill Country will begin after 3 p.m. Thursday before it expands eastward and exits the region by 11 p.m., according to NWS.

Spotty rainfall is possible; most areas expect to see about a quarter-inch, according to NWS.

The incoming cold front is expected to drop temperatures from near 90 in San Antonio on Wednesday to a high near 75 on Friday. Overnight lows are in the upper 40s and temperatures are expected to return to the 80s by the weekend.
